Beans are a staple of many gardens because they are easy to grow and very productive. They are very high in protein, and are great when eaten fresh off the plant.

Bush beans will produce all at once, so successions should be staggered every 2-3 weeks, while pole beans will produce over a month or two and can be spaced out further.

How to plant Beans

For pole beans, set up a trellis prior planting so as not to disturb the roots as the plant is growing.

Bean Varieties

There are two types of beans: bush beans and pole beans. Bush beans grow compactly to about 2 feet, and don't require a trellis. Pole beans can climb up to 10 feet, and most certainly require a trellis!

If you are short on space, trellised pole beans will produce 2-3 times the yield from the same space. However, if you want less maintenance then bush beans are the way to go.

Blue Lake 274

The snap bean (or green bean) is eaten pod and all and is one vegetable that tastes significantly better when grown at home rather than bought at the grocery store. 'Blue Lake 274' produces a very large crop of round, 6" pods all at once on 16"–18" tall, bushy plants that are disease resistant; beans are stringless when picked young. Excellent flavor, one of the best for freezing. A good container variety.

Mulch the soil, and keep leaves dry when watering. For pole beans, continually train the plant up the trellis.

Harvesting

When to harvest Beans

Continually harvest to encourage more production: the more you pick, the more you'll grow. Harvest when the pods are firm and green, but not lumpy. If you wait until the seeds inside are bulging, it's too late to eat but you can dry out the beans and use them as seeds.

How to harvest Beans

Use scissors to cut off beans, so as not to break the stems or pods.

How to store Beans

Wrap unwashed beans in a plastic bag and store in the refrigerator. Can also be frozen, canned, or pickled.
